Parlemen Uni Eropa lainnya, bahkan wakil Presiden Parlemen Uni Eropa, Mc Millan Scott menunjukkan perhatian yang sama. Berikut surat George Becali selengkapnya.
Your Excellency President Yudoyono,
Iam writing to you to bring your attention to the imminent close down of a radio station, Radio Era Baru 106.5 FM , in Batam, Indonesia. I wish you would look into this matter and make sure it is appropriately handled.
Radio Era Baru 106.5 FM is an Indonesia local station that has been broadcasting in Chinese language for 4 years. Besides general content, it broadcasts uncensored news about China to Chinese audience to local community and nearby area.
Indonesia National Broadcasting Committee (KPI) and Departement of Communication and Information (Depkominfo) refused to issue a broadcasting license (IPP) to Radio Era Baru. According to the information that I have obtained, the reason is that Beijing put pressure on these agencies because it doesn’t like the radio station’s broadcasting uncensored news about China. Iam deeply troubled that such a foreign government with poor human rights record could request and furthermore influence Indonesian government agencies to close down its own free domestic media.
As everyone knows, the Chinese communist regime controls media completely inside China and attempts to do so outside China whereever it can. However, it is still up to the free world to react to such attempt.
I do have faith in the democracy and freedom of press in Indonesia, and the government’s resolution in upholding such value. I think KPI and Depkominfo’s rejection of the license is undeserved and the government should rectify that. Despite Radio Era Baru’s effort to stay on air, including resorting to court (case pending in Supreme Court now), this small radio station may face close down soon. I respectfully urge your Excellency to look into this matter and take action to protect Indonesia’s own independence and her own media freedom.
I appreciate your attention to this matter and wish you would help towards the continued operation of the radio station.
Yours sincerely,

Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudoyono
Sekretariat Negara Republik Indonesia
State Secretary Republic of Indonesia
